About Leakey

Leakey, Texas — Upper Frio River & the Twisted Sisters

Leakey (say it LAY-key) is the county seat of Real County, one of the least populated counties in Texas. About 315 people live here. There's one stoplight. It sits where US-83 meets the Frio River canyon and the Ranch Roads that make up the Twisted Sisters. This isn't a town that grew up around tourism — it's a working ranching county seat that happens to sit on a cold, spring-fed river. People actually live here year-round. That's the appeal.

About Us

Built by a locally operated Hill Country travel company.

leakey.ai is built by Spencer and Jess Forrest, owners of Backroads Hill Country — a locally operated Texas Hill Country travel company that has represented Hill Country vacation rentals since 2001, with thousands of guest stays coordinated across the region.

Most travel platforms flatten a place like Leakey into generic top-10 lists. This is built the other way around — local knowledge first, from people who actually live and work in the Hill Country.

Frequently asked about Leakey

LAY-key. Long A. It's named for John Leakey, who settled here in 1856. Locals will let it go the first time.
No. They're two separate communities about 12 miles apart on US-83. Concan is closer to Garner State Park and more tourism-focused; Leakey is the Real County seat — a real town with a courthouse and year-round residents. A lot of people stay in one and drive to the other. For lodging in either, see backroadstexas.net.
Ranch Roads 335, 336, and 337 — a loop through the most dramatic terrain in the Hill Country, famous with motorcyclists and scenic drivers. FM 337 east of Leakey is the demanding stretch. The Frio Canyon Motorcycle Stop in town is where riders gather. The Hill Country Travel app maps the route and the stops along it.
Plenty. The Real County Historical Museum is free and better than it sounds. The Wildlife Art Museum on FM 337 is an unexpected find. The Twisted Sisters are worth driving even in a car. And Lost Maples, 20 miles northeast, is some of the best hiking and birding in the Hill Country. The Hill Country Travel app covers what's open and where.
Late spring and early fall for weather and smaller crowds. Summer is peak river season. Fall is for Lost Maples and the start of hunting season. Winter is quiet and cold — good if you want to be left alone.
Backroads Hill Country manages five rentals in the Leakey area — from Big Fern Cabin for two up to Miracle Springs Ranch Lodge for twenty, several with river access. Book direct at backroadstexas.net or call 830-522-4661. For a wider scan of area lodging, the Hill Country Travel app maps 40+ Hill Country towns including Leakey.
Yes. The river has calm sections for kids with supervision, and Garner State Park (12 miles south) has designated family swimming. Standard rule near moving water — don't leave kids unattended.
There's no hospital and no pharmacy here — nearest is Uvalde, 42 miles south, so bring what you need. Cell service is spotty in the canyon, so download offline maps. And the Frio can flood fast after rain — if the water's rising, get to high ground. For booking and trip details, backroadstexas.net and the Hill Country Travel app have you covered.
